What is Art?
I believe that the concept of art extends beyond the traditional sense of lines on paper and that it is anything that allows one to express themselves or pass on a message so that other people can experience something the artist has in mind. Art is a way to show emotions and feelings in a different way similar to how music can make people feel happy or sad, it is capable of conveying messages in a way that is completely unique and can be appreciated by all people. Simply put visual art is a physical representation of the artists idea or message. Art in the visual sense to me is a physical representation of the ideas and thoughts in my head, it serves as a form of expression when I can’t find the words to convey what I’m thinking. Personally art is something that I can turn to when I need something to do or if I am overwhelmed by the things going on around me, it helps me organize thoughts in my head and allows me to think clearly. A form of art that I really admire is animation because of the fact that it makes pictures move which never ceases to amaze and entertain me. As I continue to learn more about art I keep on getting amazed by how much there is to it.
What is Design?
Design is the essential to creating art just like how soap is essential to being clean, it is the plan that artists follow and change as they create their work. Design is something that all artists need to consider whenever they create anything, whether it be a quick little doodle while they’re bored or a masterpiece. Design is what allows a piece of art to be beautiful by organizing the separate pieces of an artwork and letting them work with each other in order to solidify a composition. A design can really polish an idea that people have and with that polishing a design can really make or break a composition. An artist’s design is something that can seen as a part of the artist, like a way to get to know them a little more. For me designs that I enjoy are things that are either really simple, like a bar going across a canvas or things that are really complex, like a bunch of tiny drawings making up a much bigger larger drawing. Design is something that I need to consider more in my projects because without a careful consideration of a design my projects feel unbalanced or just don’t look right. I feel that much of my work has been diminished due to a lack of understanding how design really works and it is something that I strive to understand more and hope to be able to use properly in the future.
What is Craft?
Craft is the idea of making something and it can also refer to a person’s profession. Crafting can be described as the process for making anything and is essential to making art. The idea of crafting a piece of artwork is very valuable to an artist in that it can reflect a artist’s technique and how they feel about the piece because for me personally when I don’t care much for a drawing that I am doing there tends to be a lack of craftsmanship in the drawing that is noticeable. There are many aspects to a person’s craft like neatness, line quality, proportion, etc. that are all very important in creating works of art and these are things that I try to keep track of while I work on drawings. The level of someone’s craft can be representative of the amount of time and effort that they put into their work and a person’s craft will only get better with more time and more effort. To me craft is very important and I try to pay the most attention to it but it can be very exhausting and sometimes stops me from getting work done.
Knowledge vs. Creativity
Knowledge and creativity are two very important aspects in creating art and the interaction between the two results in very unique art styles that differ from person to person. It is very important to understand the differences between knowledge and creativity and how these two ideas are essential to one another.
Knowledge can be compared to the seed of a plant, it is something that is grown and fostered into something bigger and stronger. Knowledge is something that is gathered over time and is utilized to understand something in greater detail, it is the concrete facts that people understand. Knowledge is something that should be pursued and people should consistently be trying to understand more and more about the things in their life. Knowledge in the arts is a necessity to understanding the effort and creativity in a piece and it is also important in creating balance and compositions in a work. Artists incorporate knowledge into their work in many different ways and by doing so they show how creativity and knowledge play off of each other to create something that only one person could make with their use creativity and knowledge.
If knowledge is like a seed then creativity would be the soil that helps the seed grow. Creativity is something that is already there and with knowledge something amazing can result from the interaction between the two. Creativity is a product of the mind that reflects the person who thinks of the idea. Creativity is the idea that starts the process of creating anything and knowledge is added to that idea in order to create a product. This process is the main interaction between creativity and knowledge and for creating art this process has many things are considered from the how its created, how it should look, and what the creator wants at the end of this process.
These two ideas work together in many different ways and the interaction between the two can really show how a person thinks. As stated before an idea can come from someone’s creativity and knowledge can be applied to that idea to create a product but it could also happen vice versa, for example, someone may try to solve a problem using their knowledge and whether they know it or not their creativity is also playing a part in the solving of that problem because another person may not solve the problem the same way that the previous person has. The things that separate knowledge from creativity is that it focuses more on cold, hard facts while creativity is more focused on what people feel and personal preferences. This distinction is important to realize because the interaction between these two ideas is something that can create some difficulties, for example, what someone may want isn’t always what’s right and this sometimes allows for the occasional rule break where people may abstract things. The interesting things is that even though a rule may be broken some things still look good, an example could be artistic conventions that break the rules of how we see things but they still make sense in our head. Knowledge and creativity are essential aspects to creating anything and it is important to understand that they are different things but work together in order to make life easier.
